Mr Gay UK Search Begins PDF Print E-mail
Nice Abs!HUNKS from across East Lancashire are being urged to come forward as the hunt begins to find Mr Gay UK.

Promoters of the annual talent contest are now bringing the search to Burnley to see if the area can provide the candidates for the beauty contest prize. Staff at Guys As Dolls, in St James Street, are gearing up to host the East Lancashire's only qualifier on March 30. And Lancashire wannabes may soon find themselves following in the footsteps of two previous competition successes.

Sailor Sam Connell, from Great Harwood, was runner-up in the 2006 competition, after he was voted Mr Plymouth. And last year's outright winner, Daniel Broughton, from Blackpool, walked away with the crown after winning over judges, including TV's Michael Aspel and pop pairing Rachel and Andy Scott-Lee, at the grand final in his hometown.

Event manager Darrell Hirst said: "We try to get as much coverage as we can across the UK, in terms of areas we cover.

"And because the gay community has been growing in Burnley - and people are wanting more and more things to get involved with - we wanted to stage a heat there.

"We are pleased to have the team at Guys as Dolls on board this year.

"When we spoke to them they said they had a few staff who had started to hit the gym and some of the customers who were interested in entering as well."

Last year's winner Daniel is set to retire after a hectic 12 months in the hot seat and he had a message for East Lancashire's contenders.

He said: "I would encourage all the lads out there who've always wanted to have a go to have a go.

"I was very nervous and not very confident at first but it is the best thing I've ever done. Come on you hot guys of Burnley - let's have another Lancastrian winner."

The organisers of the event usually hold heats in cosmopolitan areas like Brighton, Edinburgh, Bristol and London before a national final.

But in more recent times they have decided to stage qualifiers in towns like Burnley and Barnsley, to meet demand.
